2 Timothy 2:15 ~ Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The New World Translation of the Bible

In 2012 I watched a movie produced by the Watchtower Society (Society) which boasted that the New World Translation (NWT), their version of the Bible, had been translated into over a hundred different languages.

The first question that came to mind was could different translators repeatedly make the same mistakes I had found in the English version? In fact wouldn't looking at the Greek manuscript during their translation work help the Society correct some of these mistakes in the English version of the NWT? A few days later, I read this introductory sentence in the New World Translation.

This 1984 revision has been released by us to the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania for printing, translation into other leading languages and distribution. [my emphasis]

Though they would not state it so bluntly, the Society admits that they are not taught to think for themselves; thus, there is no point in their missionaries studying Koine Greek. Rather, all their translation work comes from the English version of the NWT. And along with it come all its errors.

God Himself Warns Us Not to Tamper With His Word

It is difficult to examine the spiritual truths that we hold critically; things like doctrines we hold dear and which translation of the bible we promote. Yet those who fail to do this may find themselves disappointed on the Day of the Lord.

Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it. - Matthew 7:13-14 NWT

As members of the Society expect the world to listen to their gospel and repent, God expects the Society (as well as Christians) to examine their translation before claiming that it is the Word of Jehovah. If there are errors in a translation that significantly change the meaning of what the apostles wrote, God expects us not teach these errors of the translators.

YOU must not add to the word that I am commanding YOU, neither must YOU take away from it, so as to keep the commandments of Jehovah YOUR God that I am commanding YOU. - Deuteronomy 4:2 NWT

What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. - Deuteronomy 12:32 KJV

Every saying of God is refined. He is a shield to those taking refuge in him. Add nothing to his words, that he may not reprove you, and that you may not have to be proved a liar. - Proverbs 30:5-6 NWT

Now I make known to YOU,brothers, the good news which I declared to YOU, which YOU also received, in which YOU also stand, through which YOU are also being saved, with the speech with which I declared the good news to YOU, if YOU are holding it fast, unless, in fact, YOU became believers to no purpose. - 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 NWT

I am bearing witness to everyone that hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll; and if anyone takes anything away from the words of the scroll of this prophecy, God will take his portion away from the trees of life and out of the holy city, things which are written about in this scroll. - Revelation 22:18-19 NWT

All of the warnings about adding or removing words from the Bible make it important to compare the New World Translation, not to other translations, but the original Greek itself. See if this is the translation you wish to defend on the Judgment Day.

Comparing the New World Translation to the Koine Greek

Our study is by no means an exhaustive list of passages that stray from the Greek (it seems that most do) we are just looking at alterations that significantly alter a verses meaning.

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. - Psalm 138:2 KJV

Matthew 5:19

Matt 5:19 NWT - Whoever, therefore, breaks one of these least commandments and teaches mankind to that effect, he will be called 'least' in relation to the kingdom of the heavens. As for anyone who does them and teaches them, this one will be called 'great' in relation to the kingdom of the heavens.

ὃς ἐὰν οὖν λύσῃ μίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων καὶ διδάξῃ

who if then breaks his of-the commandments these of-the least and teaches

οὕτω τοὺς ἀνθρώπους, ἐλάχιστος κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν·

this the men least he/shall/be/called in the kingdom of/the heavens:

ὃς δ᾿ ἂν ποιήσῃ καὶ διδάξῃ, οὗτος μέγας κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν.

who but does and teaches these great he-shall-be-called in the kingdom of-the heavens.

Adding the words "in relation to" completely changes the meaning of the sentence. Were these additions accidental? Or were they made to make the NWT agree with the Watchtower Society's doctrine that their members will not actually be in the Kingdom of Heaven?

Matthew 24:4-5

Matt 24:4-5 NWT - And in answer Jesus said to them: "Look out that nobody misleads YOU; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many.

καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· βλέπετε μή τις ὑμᾶς πλανήσῃ· πολλοὶ γὰρ

and answered the Jesus said to-them, you-see not any-person you astray; many for

ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου λέγοντες· ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ Χριστός, καὶ πολλοὺς πλανήσουσι.

shall-come on the name of-me saying; I am the Christ, and many stray.

The NWT commonly adds words to their translation that have no basis in the Greek. When a translation arbitrarily adds words, how does the reader know when they are reading the Word of God, or words added by the translators?

But in reply he [Jesus] said: "It is written, 'Man must live, not on bread alone, but on every utterance coming forth through Jehovah's mouth. - Matthew 4:4 NWT

Matthew 25:46

Matthew 25:46 NWT - And these will depart into everlasting cutting-off, but the righteous ones into everlasting life.

καὶ ἀπελεύσονται οὗτοι εἰς κόλασιν αἰώνιον, οἱ δὲ δίκαιοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

And go-away these into punishment eternal, the and righteous into life eternal.

Κολάζω, the root word of κόλασιν means to chastise or punish. In no other passage is κόλασιν be translated cutting-off (It means to punish like in Acts 4:21). Is the mistranslation of the word κόλασιν as "cutting-off" a mistake? Or is it because the the Society teaches that God will not punish the wicked?

Mark 1:4

Mark 1:4 NWT - John the baptizer turned up in the wilderness, preaching baptism in symbol of repentance for forgiveness of sins.

ἐγένετο ᾿Ιωάννης βαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας

came John baptizing in the wilderness and preaching baptism of-repentance

εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.

Into release/forgiveness of-sins.

John did not just turn up in the wilderness. The word "baptize" is a verb or a participle, there is no definite article (the) before the word baptizing.

The word "symbol" is not even implied in the Greek manuscript. The people were repenting of their sins not symbolizing it.

Luke 12:8

Luke 12:8 NWT - "I say, then, to YOU, Everyone that confesses union with me before men, the Son of man will also confess union with him before the angels of God.

Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν· πᾶς ὃς-ἂν ὁμολογήσῃ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων,

I-say and to-you; All who-so-ever confess in me before of-the men,

καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὁμολογήσει ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ·

and the son of-the men he-will-confess in of-him before of-the angels of-the God:

As any honest person can see, the words "union with" are not found in any Greek manuscript.

Luke 23:43

Luke 23:43 NWT - And he said to him: "Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise.

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· ἀμήν λέγω σοί, σήμερον μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ.

and said to-him the Jesus; amen I-say to-you, today with me you-will-be in the paradise.

Jesus was recorded seventy-six other times saying, "Truly I tell you," (Amen I say to you, would be truer to the Greek). Jesus was never recorded at any other time saying: "Truly I tell you today," If we understand a verse properly, the thoughts should flow in harmony. If, in Luke's account, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, …" He would be stressing the importance of the words that were to follow, today you will be with me in paradise, as opposed to stressing the point that he was talking on that particular today (which was obvious). If Jesus said, "Truly I tell you today, [with the comma after today] you will be with me in paradise". The word today did not add stress or harmony, it only added confusion. And, the confusion of this one word has caused most Christians throughout the centuries to misunderstand the verse.

Was it their faithfulness to the Greek manuscript or the doctrine of soul-sleep that translated this verse in the NWT?

John 1:1

John 1:1 NWT - In the beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god.

Εν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος,

In beginning was the Word, and the word was with the God, and God was the Word,

Λόγος is in the nominative case, thus God was always the Word; notice how John did not say "In the beginning was God". Also, since the indefinite article does not exist in the Greek there should be a good reason if adding it completely changes the meaning of a sentence. Also, since the the sentence is already referring to Jehovah, "was with God"; why should the sentence then refer to another God without John making this clear.

The apostle John begins his Gospel by honouring Jesus. Did the Watchtower Society add this one simple letter "a" to honor or demote Jesus?

John 8:58

John 8:58 NWT - Jesus said to them: "Most truly I say to YOU, Before Abraham came into existence, I have been."

εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ᾿Ιησοῦς· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, πρὶν ᾿Αβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί.

said to-them Jesus; amen amen I-say to-you before Abraham was I am.

Right after Jesus said I am, the Jews, tried to stone him. Thus, they understood what He said even if the Watchtower Society cannot.

Using a personal pronoun (ἐγὼ) in the nominative case is to speak emphatically or place the stress on the word I. In the Greek ἐγὼ εἰμί is in the present tense not past tense.

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. - Exodus 3:14 KJV

Is it because the governing body denies the deity of Jesus that the NWT changed this to the past tense? Whatever their motive, this keeps the Society's members from making a connection between Jesus and the one who spoke to Moses.

John 17:3

John 17:3 NWT - This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.

αὕτη δέ ἐστιν ἡ αἰώνιος ζωή, ἵνα γινώσκωσι σὲ τὸν μόνον ἀληθινὸν

This and is the eternal life, that they-know you the only true

Θεὸν καὶ ὃν ἀπέστειλας ᾿Ιησοῦν Χριστόν.

God and whom you-sent Jesus Christ.

Taking in knowledge of someone and knowing them are completely different concepts. The word γινώσκωσι is to know (subjunctive mood, third person plural). I have knowledge of many famous people, yet I actually know very few. The Society does not know Jesus Christ or the Father. Unfortunately they take in most of their knowledge by reading Watchtower booklets and using them to understand the Bible. If they did know God as Jesus said, they would call Him Father.

Luke 11:2a ~ And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven,

Romans 8:14-16 ~ For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

Acts 7:60

Acts 7:60 NWT - Then, bending his knees, he cried out with a strong voice: "Jehovah, do not charge this sin against them." And after saying this he fell asleep in death.

θεὶς δὲ τὰ γόνατα ἔκραξε φωνῇ μεγάλῃ· Κύριε, μὴ στήσῃς αὐτοῖς τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ταύτην.

he-prostrated and the knees cried voice great Lord, not stand to-them the sin this.

καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν ἐκοιμήθη.

and this he-said he-slept.

Replacing the name Κύριε or Lord with the name Jehovah is a deliberate mistranslation. The NWT obscures the fact that Steven is praying to Jesus (as is clearly taught in the verse right before it, even using the same word Κύριε). Jesus is often called Lord in the New Testament and Steven a man of great faith thought it was okay to pray to Him.

And they went on casting stones at Stephen as he made appeal and said: "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."- Acts 7:59 NWT

Acts 10:36

Acts 10:36 NWT - He sent out the word to the sons of Israel to declare to them the good news of peace through Jesus Christ: this One is Lord of all others.

τὸν λόγον ὃν ἀπέστειλε τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ισραὴλ εὐαγγελιζόμενος

the word which he-sent to-the sons Israel preaching-good-news

εἰρήνην διὰ ᾿ Ιησοῦ Χριστοῦ· οὗτός ἐστι πάντων Κύριος·

peace through Jesus Christ; he is-of all Lord

Adding the word other makes the sentence in the NWT to mean exactly the opposite of what Paul actually said.

Proverbs 30:5-6 NWT ~ Every saying of God is refined. He is a shield to those taking refuge in him. Add nothing to his words, that he may not reprove you, and that you may not have to be proved a liar.

Acts 20:28b

Acts 20:28b NWT - shepherd the congregation of God, which he purchased with the blood of his own Son.

ποιμαίνειν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἣν περιποιήσατο διὰ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος.

tend the congregation of-the God whom he-purchased through of-the his-own blood.

What other reason than denying the deity of Jesus could cause the translators to deliberately mistranslate this verse? It is hard not to be angry when a verse is so badly altered.

YOU must not add to the word that I am commanding YOU, neither must YOU take away from it, so as to keep the commandments of Jehovah YOUR God that I am commanding YOU. - Deuteronomy 4:2 NWT

Romans 8:9

Romans 8:9 NWT - However, YOU are in harmony, not with the flesh, but with the spirit, if God's spirit truly dwells in YOU. But if anyone does not have Christ's spirit, this one does not belong to him.

ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σαρκὶ, ἀλλ ἐν πνεύματι, εἴπερ Πνεῦμα Θεοῦ οἰκεῖ

you but not are in flesh, but in spirit, if-perhaps Spirit of-God abides

ἐν ὑμῖν. εἰ δέ τις Πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ οὐκ ἔχει, οὗτος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ

in you. if and certain Spirit Christ not he-have, he not is-of him

This verse adds words that the apostle did not say. Does the NWT to conform to the doctrine taught by the apostle Paul? Or, by the Watchtower Society?

Romans 10:13

Romans 10:13 NWT - For "everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved."

πᾶς γὰρ ὃς-ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου σωθήσεται.

all for who call-on the name of-lord shall-be-saved

The context of Romans chapter ten makes it clear that it is through the name of Jesus we will be saved. Starting at verse nine:

For if you publicly declare that 'word in your own mouth,' that Jesus is Lord and exercise faith in your heart that God raised him up from the dead, you will be saved. - Romans 10:9 NWT

The name Jehovah never appears in the Greek New Testament though it often appears in the New World Translation. Since Romans 10:13, a quote from the Old Testament (Joel 2:32), is applied to Jesus, the New World Translation obscures this proof text for the deity of Jesus Christ.

Many in the society believe they are saved because they call on the name Jehovah, yet they do not see how they have denied Jesus Christ.

Let it be known to all of YOU and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom YOU impaled but whom God raised up from the dead, by this one does this man stand here sound in front of YOU. This is 'the stone that was treated by YOU builders as of no account that has become the head of the corner.' Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved. - Acts: 4:12 NWT

Romans 13:1

Romans 13:1 NWT - Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God.

Πᾶσα ψυχὴ ἐξουσίαις ὑπερεχούσαις ὑποτασσέσθω. οὐ γὰρ ἔστιν ἐξουσία

Every soul authorities be-held-over subordinate self. for is authority

εἰ μὴ ὑπὸ Θεοῦ· αἱ δὲ οὖσαι ἐξουσίαι ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ τεταγμέναι εἰσίν·

except by God; the and that-be authorities by the God appointed are.

The Watchtower Society teaches that all man made governments stand in opposition to Jehovah. Is this subtle change because they do not believe that it was Jehovah who, more than just allowing, appointed these governments?

1st Corinthians 10:4

1st Corinthians 10:4 NWT - and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they used to drink from the spiritual rock-mass that followed them, and that rock-mass meant the Christ.

καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πόμα πνευματικὸν ἔπιον· ἔπινον γὰρ ἐκ πνευματικῆς

and all the same drank spiritual drink; they-drank for out spiritual

ἀκολουθούσης πέτρας, ἡ δὲ πέτρα ἦν ὁ Χριστός·

that-followed rock the and rock was the Christ

Often the NWT adds extra words to a passage. The word πέτρας is "rock"; why add extra word mass to this passage? Also by adding the word meant the NWT changes what Paul was saying. Paul did not imply the rock mass was a symbol of Christ. Paul said, "the rock was Christ".

Furthermore, consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul according to the wisdom given him also wrote YOU, speaking about these things as he does also in all his letters. In them, however, are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unsteady are twisting, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. - 2nd Peter 3:15-16 NWT

1st Corinthians 14:14

1st Corinthians 14:14 NWT - For if I am praying in a tongue, it is my gift of the spirit that is praying, but my mind is unfruitful.

ἐὰν γὰρ προσεύχωμαι γλώσσῃ, τὸ πνεῦμά μου προσεύχεται, ὁ δὲ νοῦς μου ἄκαρπός ἐστι.

if for I-am-praying language, the spirit of-me is-praying, the but understanding of-me unfruitful is.

Does the Watchtower Society add the words gift of the to make their Bible line up with their belief that the spirit is only a force?

"God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth." - John 4:24 NWT

However, whoever blasphemes against the holy spirit has no forgiveness forever, but is guilty of everlasting sin. - Mark 3:29 NWT

2nd Corinthians 5:19a

2nd Corinthians 5:19a NWT - namely, that God was by means of Christ reconciling a world to himself,

ὡς ὅτι Θεὸς ἦν ἐν Χριστῷ κόσμον καταλλάσσων ἑαυτῷ,

so because God was in Christ world reconciling-to himself,

Was God in Christ? Or as the NWT teaches, Did God just use Christ?

2nd Corinthians 13:5

2nd Corinthians 13:5 NWT - Keep testing whether YOU are in the faith, keep proving what YOU yourselves are. Or do YOU not recognize that Jesus Christ is in union with YOU? Unless YOU are disapproved.

῾Εαυτοὺς πειράζετε εἰ ἐστὲ ἐν τῇ πίστει, ἑαυτοὺς δοκιμάζετε.

Yourselves examine if you-are in the faith, yourselves prove.

ἢ οὐκ ἐπιγινώσκετε ἑαυτοὺς ὅτι ᾿Ιησοῦς Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν; εἰ μήτι ἀδόκιμοί ἐστε.

or not know yourselves that Jesus Christ in ye is; unless whether reprobate ye-are.

Paul taught the Corinthians that Jesus Christ is in us. The Watchtower Society teaches Christ is in union with you. Which do you believe? Because the NWT mistranslates verses like this one, the Society has no personal experience with Jesus Christ, nor do they believe it is possible.

2nd Corinthians 13:14

2nd Corinthians 13:14 NWT - The undeserved kindness of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the sharing in the holy spirit be with all of YOU.

῾Η χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ᾿Ιησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Θεοῦ

The grace of-the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of-the God

καὶ ἡ κοινωνία τοῦ ῾Αγίου Πνεύματος μετὰ πάντων ὑμῶν. ἀμήν.

and the fellowship of-the Holy Spirit with all of-you. amen.

The word χάρις, translated "undeserved kindness", is translated grace in most other Bibes. The word χάρις means much more than undeserved kindness. It is interesting how the NWT cannot say the word grace. The word is found only one time in the Book of Job. While we may not deserve Jesus Christ's grace, being undeserving is not implied in the word χάρις. For instance, in the following passage the word χάρις is translated "grateful".

I am grateful to God, to whom I am rendering sacred service as my forefathers did and with a clean conscience, that I never leave off remembering you in my supplications, night and day. - 2nd Timothy 1:3 NWT

Nobody would say that God does not deserve our gratefulness.

Galatians 6:8

Galatians 6:8 NWT - because he who is sowing with a view to his flesh will reap corruption from his flesh, but he who is sowing with a view to the spirit will reap everlasting life from the spirit.

ὅτι ὁ σπείρων εἰς τὴν σάρκα ἑαυτοῦ ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς θερίσει φθοράν,

because who sows into the flesh himself from the flesh reaps decay;

δὲ σπείρων εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος θερίσει ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

who and sows into the spirit from the sprit reaps life everlasting.

The society does not any relationship or believe in the person of the Holy Spirit. Because of this, it is common for the NWT to add words or mistranslate verses that have the word spirit in them.

I am bearing witness to everyone that hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll. - Revelation 22:18 NWT

Ephesians 4:9

Ephesians 4:9 - Now the expression "he ascended," what does it mean but that he also descended into the lower regions, that is, of the earth?

τὸ δὲ ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ-μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη πρῶτον

the and he-ascended what he except that also descended first

εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς;

into the lower parts of-the earth.

A lot of extra words were added to this sentence. It is hard to believe that translating the definite article the (genitive case) as "that is, of the" is an honest mistake and not a deliberate alteration of the scriptures. Of course Jesus descended to the earth, why would Paul say that? What Paul really said was the Jesus descended into the lower regions of the earth. What keeps the Society's members from believing this truth? Certainly not the scriptures.

Every saying of God is refined. He is a shield to those taking refuge in him. Add nothing to his words, that he may not reprove you, and that you may not have to be proved a liar.
- Proverbs 30:5-6 NWT

Philippians 2:5-7

Philippians 2:5-7 NWT - Keep this mental attitude in YOU that was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although he was existing in God's form, gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be equal to God. 7 No, but he emptied himself and took a slave's form and came to be in the likeness of men.

τοῦτο γὰρ φρονείσθω ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ ᾿Ιησοῦ,

this therefore mind in you which also in Christ Jesus,

ὃς ἐν μορφῇ Θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα Θεῷ,

who in form of-God existed not robbery he-thought the to+be equal to-God,

ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν μορφὴν δούλου λαβών, ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος,

but himself he-emptied form of-servant he took, in to-shape of-men became

καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος

and likeness found as men

The NWT moves the words around to change this passage's meaning entirely. If truth is important to you, look at the Greek carefully.

Philippians 2:9

Philippians 2:9 NWT - For this very reason also God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every other name,

διὸ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσε καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα,

wherefore also the God him raised and (kindly) given to-him name the above all names,

By adding the word other, the NWT changes the meaning of the sentence to the opposite of what the apostle said. The apostle said "above all names". By adding the word other, The Watchtower Society teaches that He was not given the name above all names.

Every saying of God is refined. He is a shield to those taking refuge in him. Add nothing to his words, that he may not reprove you, and that you may not have to be proved a liar. - Proverbs 30:5-6 NWT

The apostle Paul said Jesus was given the name above every name. If Jehovah is the name above every name than Paul taught that Jesus was given this name. This is why Jehovah is the only savior (Isaiah 43:11) and Jesus is the only savior (Act 4:12). This is also how many in the Old Testament saw God (Genesis 18 and Exodus 24:10-11), yet Jesus said no man has seen the Father.

Colossians 1:16-20

Colossians 1:16-20 NWT - 16 because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All other things have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all other things and by means of him all other things were made to exist, 18 and he is the head of the body, the congregation. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that he might become the one who is first in all things; 19 because God saw good for all fullness to dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile again to himself all other things by making peace through the blood he shed on the torture stake, no matter whether they are the things upon the earth or the things in the heavens.

The word other is added five times to the NWT though it is never once found in the Greek manuscript. By saying "all things" five different times, Paul was stressing All Things were created by Jesus. By adding the word other five different times the translators not only removed the stress, the NWT does not teach that all things were created by him.

Colossians 2:9

Colossians 2:9 NWT - because it is in him that all the fullness of the divine quality dwells bodily.

ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικεῖ πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς,

because in him dwells all the fullness of-the deity bodily,

When Paul said Jesus was the fullness of God dwelling in a body, the Society will hear Jesus has divine qualities. Since the Society does not believe in the deity of Jesus, it is not surprising that the translators of the NWT do not understand the definition of the word θεότητος.

Happy are the pure in heart, since they will see God. - Matthew 5:8 NWT

1st Timothy 4:1

1st Timothy 4:1 NWT - However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons,

τὸ δὲ Πνεῦμα ῥητῶς λέγει ὅτι ἐν ὑστέροις καιροῖς ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως

the but Spirit distinctly is-saying that in latter times shall-depart some of-the faith

προσέχοντες πνεύμασι πλάνοις καὶ διδασκαλίαις δαιμονίων,

giving head to-spirits vagabond and teachings of-demons,

It is no wonder that the Society members do not believe in the person of the Holy Spirit, if this was the only translation I read, I might not either. However, does the Watchtower Society really believe in the inspiration of demons? ("inspired utterances and teachings of demons") And why does the NWT have such a problem saying the word Spirit?

Titus 2:13

Titus 2:13 NWT - while we wait for the happy hope and glorious manifestation of the great God and of the Savior of us, Christ Jesus,

προσδεχόμενοι τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης

ready-to-receive the happy hope and appearance of-the glory

τοῦ μεγάλου Θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ᾿Ιησοῦ Χριστοῦ

of-the great God and savior of-us Jesus Christ

Paul said "God and savior", the NWT by separating the word God from Jesus denies the Lord that bought us. It is no wonder that those who use the NWT cannot see the deity of Christ. Look for yourself, did Paul say, "God and savior of us ..." or did he say, "God and of the Savior of us, ...".

Speaking about these things as he [Paul] does also in all his letters. In them, however, are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unsteady are twisting, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. - 2nd Peter 2:16 NWT

Hebrews 1:8

Hebrews 1:8 NWT - But with reference to the Son: "God is your throne forever and ever, and the scepter of your kingdom is the scepter of uprightness.

πρὸς δὲ τὸν υἱόν· ὁ θρόνος σου, ὁ Θεός, εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος·

unto but the son, the throne of-you, the God, into the ever of-the ever,

ῥάβδος εὐθύτητος ἡ ῥάβδος τῆς βασιλείας σου.

scepter of-righteousness the scepter of-the kingdom of-you.

If the apostle had meant to say God is your throne the word is (ἐστὶ) would have been in the Greek manuscript. Will Jehovah really be anybodies throne? How little the Watchtower Society expects from their translators.

1st Peter 1:11

1st Peter 1:11 NWT - They kept on investigating what particular season or what sort of season the spirit in them was Indicating concerning Christ when it was bearing witness beforehand about the sufferings for Christ and about the glories to follow these.

ἐραυνῶντες εἰς τίνα ἢ ποῖον καιρὸν ἐδήλου τὸ ἐν αὐτοῖς Πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ

searching into what or manner time make-plain the in them Spirit of-Christ

προμαρτυρόμενον τὰ εἰς Χριστὸν παθήματα καὶ τὰς μετὰ ταῦτα δόξας

witness-in-advance the into Christ Sufferings and the after these glory

Again the NWT adds extra words, yet the main problem with their translation of this verse is that the Greek says Spirit of Christ while the NWT says "spirit in them was Indicating concerning Christ". Look at what has been added and taken from this verse!

Jude 7b

Jude 7b NWT - flesh for unnatural use, are placed before us as a warning example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire.

σαρκὸς ἑτέρας πρόκεινται δεῖγμα, πυρὸς αἰωνίου δίκην ὑπέχουσαι.

flesh different they-set-before example of-fire of-eternal punishment held-under.

The words translated example and punishment are in the accusative case, so they are the objects of the sentence. The words of fire and of eternal are in the genitive case. The genitive is often viewed as the possessive case. Technically, a noun in the genitive case helps to qualify another noun. Thus, the genitive functions adjectivally to limit a noun by describing, defining, qualifying or modifying it. In Jude, the words fire and eternal each adjectivally limit the words example or punishment. Jude is a little vague here. If we did not know his context, the words in question could also be understood as:

Thus, eternal does not have to be an adjective of fire.

Even those who don't understand Greek, but who are honestly seeking the truth, should conclude that Jude was saying the example, rather than the fire, was eternal because the example of Sodom still existed when Jude wrote his letter, even though the fire had gone out.

Anyone who has studied eternal punishment with the members of the Society know that they use this verse to teach that there is no punishment for the wicked. Unfortunately, they cannot see that this verse teaches that Sodom was given as an example of what will happen to the wicked. The NWT adds and changes many words in this passage. If they would just read Jude, they would see that God is warning them that certain men have crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation. (Jude 1:4)

Jude 19

Jude 19 NWT - These are the ones that make separations, animalistic men, not having spirituality.

Οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀποδιορίζοντες, ψυχικοί, Πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες.

These are they separate-themselves, soulish, Spirit not having.

Since the Society does not believe that they can have the Spirit of God, they mistranslate the word Spirit as spirituality. What does spirituality mean?

Revelation 2:8

Revelation 2:8 NWT - "And to the angel of the congregation in Smyrna write: These are the things that he says, 'the First and the Last,' who became dead and came to life again,

Καὶ τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῆς ἐν Σμύρνῃ ἐκκλησίας γράψον· τάδε λέγειὁ πρῶτος καὶ

And to-the angel of-the in Smyrna congregation write: And-these-things says first and

ὁ ἔσχατος, ὃς ἐγένετο νεκρὸς καὶ ἔζησεν·

the last, which was dead and is-alive.

In Revelation 2:8 the one who was speaking was called the First and the Last. Reading the NWT, you are lead to believe that the one speaking said the words 'the First and the Last,'. Can anyone really believe that this is just a mistake and not the result of the Watchtower Society believing that Jesus is a created being?.

I am the Al'pha and the'ga, the first and the last, - Revelation 22:13 NWT

This is what Jehovah has said, the King of Israel and the Repurchaser of him, Jehovah of armies, "I am the first and I am the last, and besides me there is no God." - Isaiah 44:6 NWT

Revelation 3:14

Revelation 3:14 NWT - And to the angel of the congregation in La·o·di·ce'a write: These are the things that the Amen says, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation by God,

Καὶ τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῆς ἐν Λαοδικείᾳ ἐκκλησίας γράψον· τάδε λέγει

And to-the angel of-the in Laodicea congregation write, these-things says

ὁ ἀμήν, ὁ μάρτυς ὁ πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός, ἡ ἀρχὴ τῆς κτίσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ·

the amen, the witness the faithful and true, the ruler of-the creation of-the God.

The word ἀρχὴ can be translated beginning or ruler and it is translated both ways in the NWT. So how do we know it should be translated ruler in this verse? Because in chapters 2 and 3 Jesus is repeating to each church what He already expounded in chapter one. Let's look at this closer.

To the First Church he said "These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks", and this repeats what He said in chapter 1 verse12-13 "I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man". And in Rev 1:16 "And he had in his right hand seven stars."

To the Second Church he said "These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive", and this repeats what He said in Rev 1:17 "I am the first and the last" and in Rev 1:18 "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore".

To the Third Church he said "These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges", and this repeats what He said in Rev 1:16 "And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword".

To the Fourth Church he said "These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass", and this repeats what He said in Rev 1:14-15 "His eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace".

To the Fifth Church he said "These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars", and this repeats what He said in Rev 1:4 "Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne".

To the Sixth Church he said "These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that opener, and no man shutter; and shutter, and no man openeth", and this repeats what He said in Rev 1:18 "and have the keys of hell and of death.and have the keys of hell and of death."

To the Seventh Church he said "These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of the creation of God", and this repeats Rev 1:6 "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. "

No where in chapter one of Revelation does it speak of Jesus being a created being. And Revelation 3:14 rather than the Watchtower Society's major proof text to prove Jesus is a created being is, when taken in context, a passage that glorifies Jesus Christ.

Revelation 6:9

Revelation 6:9 NWT - And when he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those slaughtered because of the word of God and because of the witness work that they used to have.

Καὶ ὅτε ἤνοιξε τὴν πέμπτην σφραγῖδα, εἶδον ὑποκάτω τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τὰς

And when he-opened the fifth seal, I-saw under the alter all

ψυχὰς τῶν ἐσφαγμένων διὰ τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἣν εἶχον.

souls of-the slain for the word of-the God and for the witness which they-had.

By adding the word work to this verse, the NWT leads its readers to believe you must go door to door to be counted in this group. While the Organization's governing body promises special privileges to its publishers. They themselves may have a hard time on Judgment Day.

I am bearing witness to everyone that hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll. - Revelation 22:18 NWT

Other Additions

John 14:10 NWT - Do you not believe that I am in union with the Father and the Father is in union with me? The things I say to YOU men I do not speak of my own originality; but the Father who remains in union with me is doing his works.

The NWT translates the word ἐν as in union with over eighty times, though there is no basis for this in the Greek. A more accurate translation would simply be in.

In the same way the NWT often adds the word exercise or exercising, etc though there is no basis (except 1st Timothy 4:8) for these words in the Greek.

John 14:1 NWT - Do not let YOUR hearts be troubled. Exercise faith in God, exercise faith also in me.

A more faithful translation would be,

John 14:1 KJV - Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

The NWT translation often chooses words that while not technically wrong, are misleading. For example "First extract the rafter from your own eye", why use the word rafter? The Greek word translated rafter is not rafter as a rafter is a specific type of lumber used in the construction of roofs. Maybe the word could be translated lumber. Words like beam and log used in other translations are much more faithful to the Greek.

It is no wonder that no one except a member of the society quotes from the NWT except to use it as an example of poor academic skill. I will retract this paragraph if a Member of the Watchtower society will show me an example of a non-member scholar praising any part of the New World Translation.

It is also no wonder that the translator's names are missing from their work. The Watchtower Sociey claims that the governing body did not want to take the glory, yet Moses, the prophets and others in the Old Testament as well as everyone except the writer of Hebrews identified themselves in the New Testament. It is likely, had the translators had signed their work, that their lack of skill would have been exposed. There is little fear of any Greek student praising the translators if, even now, they should take responsibility for their work.

For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. - Acts 20:29-30

While God will be angry with those who deliberately distort His word, if you miss out on God's blessings because you deliberately teach these errors, you will have nobody to blame but yourself.

The ninth commandment says not to bear false witness. If you say that the apostles said words, and expressed ideas that they did not teach, you will be found to be a false witness on the Day of Judgment.

Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. Members of the Society have sold themselves as slaves to their governing body for less than that. If you claim to be Jehovah's Witness it is time that you prayerfully consider if trusting your soul to an unknown translator is being faithful to Jehovah.

May God Bless those who take the time to see if those things taught in this study are true.

Now the [Berians] were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so. - Acts 17:11 NWT
