If you are contemplating suicide and need someone
to talk to, call a national suicide hotline counselor:
If you believe someone is suicidal
If you know someone that you believe to be suicidal, that person must be watched 24/7 until you believe they are past their crises. The wish to die does not last forever. While it may seem like a considerable burden, consider the alternative. If you have the person checked into a hospital, they will usually be medicated.
Signs that someone is contemplating suicide:
Often there are no signs at all. The following list, from the National Institute of Mental Health, lists these behaviors as warning signs for suicide.
- Talking about feeling suicidal or wanting to die
- Feeling hopeless, that nothing will ever change or get better
- Feeling helpless, that nothing one does makes any difference
- Feeling like a burden to family and friends
- Abusing alcohol or drugs
- Putting affairs in order (e.g., organizing finances or giving away possessions to prepare for one’s death)
- Writing a suicide note
- Putting oneself in harm’s way, or in situations where there is a danger of being killed
In my own experience, common symptoms also include unforgiveness and selfish behavior.
Avoid psychotropic drugs
All professionally prescribed medication for treating depression have side effects, some side effects include causing suicidal feelings. Therefore have your doctor explain all the side-effects of your medication (and the side-effects of withdrawal) before you consider taking a medication. If you started having suicidal feelings after you began taking depression medication, tell your doctor immediately.
Depression is temporary
Ecclesiastes 3:4 ~ A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
It is important to understand that going through depression from time to time is a normal part of the human condition. Feeling suicidal does not last forever. When you are depressed, you must not give up hope. There are very few people who have not at one time or another had the same struggle.
1 Corinthians 10:13 ~ There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Jesus Christ offered Healing for Depression in his gospel. If you haven't looked already, check it out.
Matthew 11:28-29 ~ Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Commit your life to Jesus Christ
Committing your life to Jesus Christ, is not the same thing as saying the sinner’s prayer. Often we must to come to the point of despair before we reach out to God. Many, including myself, have found deliverance from depression and other mental disorders simply by giving their lives to Jesus. The ancient King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar tells his own story, how he once suffered from mental illness:
Daniel 4:33 ~ The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.
All Nebuchadnezzar's reason left him and he suffered from this malady for seven years:
Daniel 4:34 ~ And at the end of the [seven years], I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation.
Many put off, or refuse the offer of Christ because they do not want to quit having fun. However, if you are suffering from depression, what have you got to lose? If you would join those who have given their lives to Jesus, to do with as He pleased, you can share our common experience. This does not mean you will never have sorrow, but you do not have to suffer from emotional overwhelm.
Habakkuk 3:18 ~ Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
